Lap Quilts for Seniors

Virginia Star Quilters donates about 100 lap quilts yearly (at Christmas time) to the Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging.  The agency gives the quilts to seniors who would otherwise not receive anything at all for Christmas. They are generally 42″ x 54″ lap quilts.

Directions for making quick strip pieced senior quilts:

Using 2 colors – finished will be 42 x 54

  • Cut (4) 6 ½” strips from color A (width of fabric)
  • Cut (4) 6 ½” strips from color B (width of fabric)
  • Cut (5) 3 ½” border strips (width of fabric)
  1. Sew one strip of Color A to one strip of Color B. Make four sets, press seams.
  2. Sew two strip sets right sides together – opposites together (A to B) and (B to A)
  3. Cut these in 6 ½” segments – you’ll have 24 segments.
  4. Sew pairs of segments together into a 4-patch. You’ll have 12.
  5. Sew (2) 4-patches together into a unit – you’ll have six units.
  6. Sew (2) units together so you now have (8) 6 ½” squares in a vertical row. You’ll have three vertical rows.
  7. Rotate (1) vertical row upside down and sew two rows together. Add third row.
You now have a quilt top 6 squares by 8 squares.
  8. Add border.

walkerbagWe also make walker bags, for those who may have received a quilt in the past. Directions for making a walker bag:

  1. Cut 2 coordinating pieces of fabric 45″ by 15″. With right sides together, stitch all of the way around, leaving an opening for turning. Turn and press. Topstitch all around the edges, being sure to sew the opening closed.
  2. Turn up each end 9″ to form pockets on the outside.  Stitch the edges of the pocket.
  3. Sew a piece of velcro to each side, just above the pockets, on the inside.
  4. That’s all there is to it!
